What are chemical peels?

A chemical peel is a way of encouraging your skin to “turn over” and regenerate new cells.

By design, a chemical face peel allows your new cells to have better contact with fresh air resulting in smooth skin texture and an overall renewed look.

You may want to know “what chemicals are in chemical peels?”
With most types of peels, it is some acid for skin peeling that does the heavy lifting.

Some chemical peels on the face may be an Alpha-hydroxy acid Peel (AHA) also known as a lactic acid Peel.
Other facial chemical peels may be beta hydroxy acid peels (BHA) also known as a salicylic acid Peel.

There is more information about AHA skin peels and BHA skin peels below.

What does a chemical peel do?

For many people, the effects of a chemical peel are amazing.  Knowing what a skin peel does is really as simple as 1, 2, 3!

Chemical peels improve the appearance of loose skin, rally against and eliminate acne, eradicate freckles and dark spots caused by the sun, lessen or remove pigmentation caused by pregnancy or hormonal changes and get rid of light scarring.

If you are wondering “do chemical face peels hurt?” The answer is: for some people a facial peel is mildly irritating, and for some other people a chemical peel as a mild to medium discomfort level.

Good chemical peels strike the right balance between the skin’s chemical peel back and the level of discomfort.

If there is something on your skin that happens to react with the peeling acid, a neutralizer can be applied to stop the effect.

What benefits does chemical peeling provide?

The modern combination of ingredients in chemical peels is designed to do considerably more than merely strip off the uppermost layer of skin. Their higher purpose is to permeate the skin with minerals, vitamins, and fundamental elements that help rejuvenate collagen, safeguard from everyday hazards present in modern life, refresh hyaluronic acid, and strengthen youthful skin growth.

Chemical peeling is widely recognized to be effective in:

  • Improving and eliminating mild scarring.
  • Treating and significantly reducing some types of acne.
  • Handling the wrinkles that are caused by aging and overexposure to the sun.
  • Decreasing and minimizing freckles, age spots, and melisma.
  • Refining the vibrancy and overall tone of your skin.
  • Shrinking pores and eliminating fine lines.

Will chemical peels help acne and blackheads?

A better question would be “how much will chemical peels help acne and blackheads?”

Medical skin peels will clean out your pores, encourage cell turnover and collagen production.
With clean pores and increased collagen production and cell turnover, your pores will shrink minimizing the occurrence of blackheads and acne in the same area.

You may see incredible results after just one peel, but for best results, we recommend a course of 4 to 6 facial peels spaced about four weeks apart.

If you are concerned with your appearance when you go to the beach, please know that chemical peels and back acne drive some excellent results.

Chemical peels for acne scars

As a result of acne scarring, many people call and ask me “what is the best type of chemical peel for acne scars?”

Some clinicians believe that strong peels deliver the best results.
Usually, the amount of downtime required is just not practical for the use of heavy-duty chemical peels.
Also, there is a group of people that do not achieve excellent results with the big bang approach.

I work with the assumption that regular, high-quality, nourishing treatments that stimulate new skin growth will produce consistent, visually stunning results.

When asked if I recommend microdermabrasion or chemical peel for acne scars, my response is:
“I still believe that good chemical peels will deliver the best results.  Bearing in mind that chemical peels nurture the skin with nutrients in addition to stripping off the upper layer of the dermis.”

Chemical peels are more popular than ever!

This is a picture that is related to chemical peels by Refresh Face and Skin Rejuvenation demonstrating that even Cleopatra used chemicals to help her skin.Over 2000 years ago Cleopatra soaked in tubs of donkey’s milk to smooth and nourish her skin. Donkey’s milk is rich in vitamins, minerals, bioactive enzymes, and lactic acid as well as other essential fatty acids. Lactic acid is still a key component in many facial peels today!

Chemical peels were all the rage in the 1990s. They experienced a lull in the early 2000’s when lasers that could resurface the skin started emerging. With time and experience, people discovered that chemical acid peels delivered better results addressing some skin conditions than lasers in many cases.

An example of this resurgence would be a chemical peel for melasma treatment…
Melasma can be triggered and exacerbated by heat and light (for example sun exposure).
*Why then, would a laser that delivers heat and light be useful in treating melasma? This is one area where the peeling treatment for pigmentation
stands out versus laser.

What about the pain?

Anyone that had a glycolic peel in the 90s most likely experienced a lot of pain, redness, swelling, and an extended period of downtime. Since then, the way that dermatologists approach facial peels – and the formulas of the acid themselves – have improved dramatically.

Less irritation that comes with a lower percentage of acid seems to deliver outcomes that are superior to doses of high acid. Lowered irritation means better results and less pain. Rather than one “massive chemical peel” the approach of many peels to provide steady improvement seems to deliver superior overall visually stunning results.

Skin peels are a popular nonsurgical procedure for enhancing skin’s beauty because of their low cost and low risk as compared to other methods. Even plastic surgeons admit that chemical peels are popular at addressing skin texture, discoloration, and wrinkles.

Getting rid of dark circles under your eyes now has a much higher success rate as the right chemical peel under your eyes lets revitalized skin cells shine through.
A hand chemical peel gets rid of the sunspots and hyperpigmentation that happens from the sun damaging your hands while driving.

Salicylic Acid Peel

Sometimes referred to as a beta hydroxy acid peel (BHA) the main ingredient in those peels is most likely salicylic acid. It does wonders for managing inflamed skin, clogged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, and acne.

We use these salicylic acid peels on acne prone skins because they penetrate deeper into the pores removing trapped oils, reducing inflammation and purging dead cells. Because of its deeper penetration, it brings dirt, dead cells, rancid oils, and in general clogs closer to the top of your skin where the acid exfoliates away.

Salicylic acid also does a beautiful job of hanging around deep in your pores keeping them clear over time, thus allowing your skin to heal and fading post-pimple splotches.

Lactic Acid Peel

Lactic acid Peels, also known as alpha-hydroxy acid peels (AHA) are known to have a lesser chance of an allergic reaction. Many believe the lowered risk is because lactic acid is already something present in your body.

A lactic acid facial will remove the top layer of your skin and encourage increased collagen formation. These removed top layers are typically the ones responsible for fine lines, excess pigmentation, and uneven skin tone in general.

A regular series of lactic acid peels can postpone the signs of aging and addressed deep acne scars.

Can chemical peels save you money on skincare products?

Absolutely!

Remember that chemical peels remove the top layer of dead skin cells?
You will need less product to produce the same effect because those dead skin cells won’t be absorbing the product before it gets to the healthy skin cells.

Chemical peels also encourage hyaluronic acid and collagen production.

Your skin will naturally look better – from the inside! – without the need for skincare products to boost that production.

A chemical eye peel will encourage the thin skin around your eyes to renew and refresh.
It can also help eliminate the look of dark circles under your eyes.
Your cheeks and chin and neck will have an even tone and smoother appearance.

In general, a peeling treatment will give your skin an effervescent look.
All this means you will need far less makeup because you will have fewer blemishes and imperfections to cover up!

Chemical peel pre-treatment

Please be open and honest with your clinician beforehand!

If you have a history of or a current infection of herpes, cold sores, HIV/AIDS or keloid you want your clinician to know because some chemical peels may have a high likelihood of scarring or causing infection with those pre-existing conditions.

You may want to talk to us ahead of time, as we may recommend some products that will better prepare your skin for a chemical peel.
These products not only give you a better experience during the peel, but they may also significantly decrease recovery time after your peel.

Avoid sun exposure for a couple of weeks before your peel, and apply SPF 30+ sunscreen every day.

Chemical peel post-treatment

After a chemical peel, the most important thing you can do is avoid irritating your skin.

Please refrain from picking, peeling, exfoliating, or scrubbing the skin away prematurely.
While relatively quick, it will take time for the new collagen and hyaluronic acids to fully develop.

Irritating your skin will slow down the healing process and produce lesser results.

During this time it is vital to protect your skin from sun exposure!
Apply SPF 30 or greater (preferably fragrance-free) sunscreen every day.
